Glass Flower Bead Tip #1

I’m sure you’ve been told the more you torch, the more you get the feeling for the glass…but seeing is very important, too.

Learning the different shades of color glass goes through, as it cools, is a great indication for when it needs to be warmed up again.

Here’s a little experiment to help you learn the perfect time to pop your glass flower bead in the kiln.

Heat up a gather of glass, put it under your work table and watch it while the gather cools. It will go through a yellow, then orangy and finally red glow. The rule of thumb is to put it in the kiln after it reaches the red glow.

Glass Flower Bead Tip #2

I like to make sure I don’t let my glass flower beads get any cooler then the yellow/orange glow while I’m working on my flower.

WHY?

The problem of breakage comes from the reintroducing of the flame’s  heat to glass that has gotten too cool. (Thermal Shock!)

Glass flower beads are especially temperamental because of all the different thicknesses of glass you have to keep heated.

BIGGY TIP #3 to stop the breakage on your glass flower beads!

I focus my attention on building in heat into the core of the glass flower beads and then lightly twirl in the flame to evenly distributed the heat into the entire flower… especially the tips of the petals.

I really dwell on this in my tutorials! Most of my time torching glass flower beads is spent twirling!
